Why would you want two bikes ?           (from a hometown friend, March 17, 2010)

a "True Tale"

Two years ago my 30 yr old son lost his best friend and co worker/ fellow fireman due to an accident at work.  He was a great man who filled in for me like an older brother to my son, as I have worked away from home in mining for years.  My son had expressed interest in his deceased friend's motorcycle previously.  His friend's widow decided to sell this bike recently and I had to act fast as word was that others were interested and it was going to sell fast.  (interesting fact; the widow is a fireman also in the same fire hall with my son)

Yesterday, unknown to my son, I purchased the bike for him.  I then made up a story that I had wrecked my transmission on my Intruder and needed him to come over with his tilt trailer to help me transport it to a dealer for repair.  He was very upset with me and questioned me about over revving etc.  Of course I had to have my fun with him and said that I was racing on the highway and tried to downshift quickly as there were deer on the road when I heard a bang...  he said " you heard a bang?!" with this condescending quirky look...(I was really enjoying this...)

He then showed my a photocopy of a used bike for sale as he was concerned abo
ut the cost of a transmission.  He then went on to talk about getting a bike so that he could ride with me this season.  I then pulled out the owners manual of his deceased friend's bike and said " why would you want two bikes?"   Well the rest is history.  We went over and loaded up his new bike.  His friend's widow was very happy to see the bike going to a close friend and my son was speechless.

It is a 96 custom 1200 Sportster that needs some TLC.  I look fwd to working with my son on this bike and riding with him this season, if my grandkids will let us have some time together!
