Daydream Believer : "You can't always be what you want..."

"...but you can be what you need to be"

Music is my passion. I wanted to be a rock star.

Just a couple of problems... didn't like the travel, hated band practice, not good at socializing, couldn't see doing it at age 40, wasn't that good, really... other than that, well, there's the money thing... And the overall truth ? I just wanted to fit in somewhere.

I lucked into computer programming. This was about seven years before the first Personal Computer from IBM came out. So it was a gamble, but I was good at math...

As it happens, I get the same sense of satisfaction from writing a program and solving problems as I do writing a song, probably more so. And it's easier for me.

So I've benefited from a career in a field that I like and that's been in demand. And it has allowed me to enjoy my passion as a passion, not as a 'job'. Good choice for me, as it turned out.

For a sample of a fascinating, but challenging, life as a musician, read the book "Gimme an R! - the story of Brian Vollmer, lead vocalist of Helix."

So yeah, you may want to be a rock star, or something like that, but it's not the only answer for you. There's other careers you may enjoy. And then maybe when you hit age 50 or so...
